stage one of grief: Denial

stage one of grief: Denial

Embracing God’s Gentle Truth in Confusion

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28

Denial is often the first shield our heart puts up when loss feels too overwhelming to grasp. It’s that foggy space where reality feels suspended, as if saying “no” might protect us from unbearable pain. God meets you in this confusion with tender patience, understanding that your soul needs time to catch up.

It’s okay to not have all the answers right now. God doesn’t expect you to be strong in this moment. Instead, He invites you to come to Him with your raw, unanswered questions and your aching heart. He is your refuge—the only constant when everything else feels uncertain.

As you navigate denial, remember the gentle promise that God is close to your broken heart. He is working even when you don’t see it, preparing your soul for healing and hope. Trust His timing, and allow yourself to rest in His presence without pressure or shame.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18

Closing Prayer

Lord,
My heart is numb and confused. I don’t fully understand what’s happening, and part of me wants to deny this pain. Please meet me in this fog of uncertainty. Help me to lean on You as my refuge and strength. Surround me with Your peace and hold me tenderly until clarity comes.

Amen.
